Welcome to IndianaGenealogyIndex.com!
Vision
To facilitate effective searches for freely available birth, death, and burial information in the State of Indiana.
Background
Much unproductive time can result from navigating through a virtual 'sea' of genealogy websites, most of which end up serving as links or pointers to fee-based or subscription sites. This site organizes and consolidates freely available genealogical information into one central space. This will provide options that are more likely to add real-value and time-savings when carrying out birth, death, and cemetery information research in Indiana.
WHERE TO START
DETERMINE THE ORIGINAL RECORD'S LOCATION:
PROVIDE ENOUGH DETAIL TO SORT AND FIND THE ORIGINAL RECORD:
Acquiring your ancestor's birth, death, and burial information is helpful in determining their lineage, place of residence, occupation, locale, and many more details that begin to fill-in their life story.
With some caveats, original birth and death records reside at the County Health Department where the birth or death occurred.
If the county is not known, books exist with names of the newborn (or deceased) in alphabetical/indexed order along with the date and location of the event. These books generally are bound by individual county and may reside at libraries, online, etc. These are often titled birth indexes, death indexes, and Cemetery and Grave Indexes.
Many Health departments will not be able to locate the original record unless you provide details such as date of the event, first and last name, mother, father, etc.
